50 States Through Reading: Georgia

This will be a little different then just books. This will be a couple of book reviews in one post. So we "traveled" to Georgia for a couple of days at my house. We read a few books and learned some neat info about the state of Georgia. To keep track of our states that we have "traveled" we color the state into a map that I printed off of the United States. We will also have activities involved in the process.

Celebrating Georgia: 50 States to Celebrate by Jane Kurtz and illustrated by C.B. Canga was published in August 2015. In this book, we say hello to Mr. Geo, which is everybody's geography teacher. He is visting Georgia, the Peach State. He travels all over Georgia and learn new things about the state and takes us on the journey.

My kids really liked this book which is a mix of fiction and non-fiction. They loved how it had a story-line involved in the story. I loved how it talked about different main points of the state and showed it in the illustrations. The illustrations are colorful and simple for all ages to follow along. Even my two year old was not bored in this book. This book was perfect introduction to Georgia, the Peach State.

Georgia (True Book My United States) written by Nelson Yomtov was published February 2018. In this book it explores Georgia rugged wilderness and amazing cities. They also touch on a little about the history of Georgia. They talk about the food and jobs that are in this state.

I really liked this book, as I read aloud to my kids I could tell that they took some of the info in. This book would be best for third through fifth grade. So some of the info was above my younger twos head. But we all took something away from this book which is a huge plus in this book. I also love how they had some easy pages in this book about top ten facts and such in this book. It's a great book to check out and read with your kids.

Georgia (U.S.A. Travel Guides) by Ann Heinrichs published in August 2017. In this book, they take you through the parks in Savannah's historic district to Martin Luther King Jr.'s childhood home in Atlanta.

I really liked this book to finish our reading about the state of Georgia. I loved the pictures throughout this book. This book the kids really had a hard time paying attention to this book. I don't recommend this for younger kids. I think this book really fits kids fourth and fifth grade but that is even pushing it. I personally liked it because of the information that I could use to help my kids learn about the state. In the end of the book, I just pulled facts from the page and shared them for my kids to understand.

One of the activities we did was we colored the state in on our map of the United States (download here) and we colored the state flag (download here). I also made a notecard with the state name on one side and the capital on the other. As we learn each state we will be doing those three things to help us learn about the states.
