Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner

Based on a Rocky Mountain legend, Stone Fox tells the story of Little Willy, who lives with his grandfather in Wyoming. When Grandfather falls ill, he is no longer able to work the farm, which is in danger of foreclosure. Little Willy is determined to win the National Dogsled Race - the prize money would save the farm and his grandfather. But he isn't the only one who desperately wants to win. Willy and his brave dog Searchlight must face off against experienced racers, including a Native American man named Stone Fox, who has never lost a race. Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner illustrated by Greg Hargreaves was published in January 1980. This book has won the George C. Stone Center for Children's Book Recognition of Merit Award in 1987.

So this was one of the books that my son, Miles, had to read for school. I had the pleasure of being able to read it along side of him and his class. This book is short but it's amazing chapter book. The illustrations throughout this book are amazing and they are not in color but they have details in them. The text in this book is simple that it's a perfect book for third graders to read. But also hard enough that they will be a little bit challenged. The story-line is amazing and I wished there was more to the story. But beware the ending kind of sucked as it's so sad. I highly recommend you check out this amazing story.
