Brave Irene by William Steig

Irene Bobbin is the dressmaker's daughter. Her mother, Mrs. Bobbin, isn't feeling so well and can't possibly deliver the beautiful ball gown she's made for the duchess to wear that very evening. So plucky Irene volunteers to get the gown to the palace on time, in spite of the fierce snowstorm that's brewing --quite an errand for a little girl. But where there's a will, there's a way, as Irene proves in the danger-fraught adventure that follows. She must defy the wiles of the wicked wind, her most formidable opponent, and overcome many obstacles before she completes her mission. Surely, this winning heroine will inspire every child to cheer her on. Brave Irene by William Steig was published in October 1986. It was the New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year in 1986.

I had a lot of hope for this book. Let's first talk about the illustrations. The illustrations in this book are so beautifully well drawn. They have colors but it really fits the story. My kids really didn't enjoy this story and felt like it needed more details. They felt like the story-line was flat and were bored throughout the book. I felt like the story had potential to be great but in it's first draft. Not sure if it's because of the age of the book and when it was written but we just couldn't get into the book.
