Once Upon a Camel by Kathi Appelt

Zada is a camel with a treasure trove of stories to tell. She's won camel races for the royal Pasha of Smyrna, crossed treacherous oceans to new land, led army missions with her best camel friend by her side, and outsmarted a far too pompous mountain lion. But those stories were before. Now, Zada wanders the desert as the last camel in Texas. But she's not alone. Two tiny kestrel chicks are nestled in the fluff of fur between her ears -kee-killy-keeing for their missing parents - and a dust storm the size of a mountain is taking Zada on one more grand adventures. And it could lead to this achy old camel's most brilliant story yet. Once Upon a Camel by Kathi Appelt illustrated by Eric Rohmann was published in September 2021. This book is currently nominated for William White 3rd-5th grade children's book award for 2024.

Mason is finally at the age to be apart of the William Allen White award process. At his school he has to read 3 of the five books that are nominated and has to do some activity for each book. This was our first book on the list. The illustrations in this book are few more then I thought would be in this chapter book. They were very well down and in great parts of the book. I thought this book was slow and felt like it was dragging on. It had parts of the book that was entertaining but it was dragging in a lot of it. I felt like some of the book could have been left out. I did appreciate that the whole book was in the view of the camel. I thought it made the book different then other books. Mason was bored in the book and didn't understand a lot of the vocabulary in the book. So we had to stop quite a lot to look up a word to help us understand. The back and forth between Zada's stories to what was happening in the now was confusing in parts. It was hard to keep track if we were in the past or the present. Also when the author decided to throw in what was happening to mama bird in her point of view threw us both off. It's a cute story and I really loved the ending of the book. I thought for sure Zada was going to pass in the little town.

Quote That I Enjoyed

"It seems that grief can open doors - and hearts, too, if you think about it-some of which is unexpected."
