Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld

Keeping vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Arlington National Cemetery, are the sentinel guards, whose every turn, honors and remembers America's fallen. They protect fellow soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, making sure they are never alone. To stand there - with absolute precision, in every type of weather, at every moment of the day, one in a line uninterrupted since midnight July 2, 1937 - is the ultimate privilege and the most difficult post to earn in the army. Everything these men and women do is in service to the Unknowns. Their standard is perfection. Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld illustrated by Matt Tavares was published in March 2021. This book was nominated for a William Allen White Children's Award for 3rd-5th in 2023-2024.

This is another book that Mason and I read together for the William Allen White award. Anyways the illustrations in this book are amazing and beautiful. They really got the point across on each page what was happening the book. I loved the point of view of this book so much which was the point of one of the Unknown soldiers. This book made me cry as it touched on feelings which is the respect that this story needed and successful conveyed. This book also brought on a lot of discussion from Mason and I about the Unknown Soldiers which I loved. I love how this book had a poetry feel to it but it was not all poetry. The words flowed amazing on every page and we had no trouble with any hang ups. Mason did not have any issues with vocabulary on this book or big words he didn't know how to read. I highly recommend this book.
