Sophie's Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller

On a trip to the farmer's market with her parents, Sophie chooses a squash, but instead of letting her mom cook it, she names it Bernice. From then on, Sophie brings Bernice everywhere, despite her parents' gentle warnings that Bernice will begin to rot. As winter nears, Sophie does start to notice changes...What's a girl to do when the squash she loves is in trouble? Sophie's Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller illustrated by Anne Wilsdorf was published in August 2013. This is the first book in Sophie's Squash series.

This book has won SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Text in 2014, Charlotte Zolotow Award in 2014, Ezra Jack Keats Award Nominee for Winter in 2014, Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Picture Books in 2013.

This was a strange unusual tale that reminds me a lot like Mary had a little lamb. It's such a cute story though. I love how its about an usual friendship between the girl and her friend. The illustrations in this book are simple but very detailed. There is not much color on the pages but it's enough that it keeps a preschooler involved. We love the natural story pattern of it going up then down. Cassie really enjoyed learning about friendship. I was able to explain that we can be friends with all different people in our lives. I highly recommend checking it out.
