Juan Bobo Goes to Work by Marisa Montes

What can you do with a boy who tries to do things right but only leaves disaster in his wake? Laugh--that's what! In this rollicking Juan Bobo tale, our hero sets out to find work at the farm and the grocery. Although the tasks are simple and the directions couldn't be clearer, he always find a way to bungle things up as only a character whose name means "Simple John" could. Juan Bobo Goes to Work by Marisa Montes illustrated by Joe Cepeda was published in September 2000. This book was nominated for Pura Belpre Award for illustrations in 2002.

As a mom, I love finding different cultures to teach my kids about. Especially in literature. I find we can learn about other cultures through amazing fiction stories. The illustrations in this book are so amazing that my kids can actually see things that they normally wouldn't see in our own culture. We also loved learning about this folktale that is common in Puerto Rican. The story is so neat and really easy to read aloud for the kids. I highly recommend checking this story out. This book would be perfect to introduce when talking about different cultures or even folk tales. But also use this book to talk about similarities and differences in our folktales and in theirs.
