How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long

Jeremy Jacobs, a boy who joins Captain Braid Beard and his crew in this witty look at the finer points of pirate life. Jeremy learns how to say "scurvy dog," sing sea chanteys, and throw food...but he also learns that there are no books or good night kisses on board. How to Become a Pirate by Melinda Long illustrated by David Shannon was published in September 2003. This book has won Book Sense Book of the Year Award of Children's Illustrated (2004), California Young Readers Medal Nominee for Primary (2006), and Irma Black Award (2004).

I love David Shannon's illustrations and my kids love the books he write so we thought this would be a cute book. But...we were not much of fan of the story-line. My kids thought it dragged on and on. They were not a fan of how the book drag on and lost interest really quickly. We did enjoy the illustrations throughout the book and how life-like they are. They resembles the illustrations in No, David books. This book needs some help with story-line but in the end I just made up the words of the story to go with the illustrations.
